NEW PROJECT - JARROW CIVIC HALL
67.jpg

John Knowles

I have had an offer to buy The Former Jarrow Civic Hall accepted by the local authority. The purchase was completed on Friday 15th April. The restoration and repair work should commence soon.

The building is directly across the road from my existing business JK Clothing Ltd.

The news of the purchase was broken by the South Shields Gazette on Monday 18th April.

It is our intention to bring the ballroom back to its original condition and open it for use for functions such as live music, dancing, private functions and to consider any other function that people want to see it used for (subject to planning permission).

We have had discussions with entertainment companies who can provide theme party nights e.g. West end musicals, pantomime, tribute artists etc.

The room would be made available to the sequence dancers, ballroom and tea dancers that used to use the hall prior to its closure.

There is a room alongside the ballroom which we are calling the ballroom lounge. We intend to use this room as a restaurant/lounge. There is a large kitchen adjacent to this room.

There are 2 smaller function rooms on the ground floor. These could be used for children's parties, christenings, craft classes, exercise type functions, children's play area, day lettings etc.

These function rooms will also be used for some subsidised functions particularly for older people. Functions such as craft classes, social functions and computer classes. The computer classes would teach in the use of face book, twitter and skype so that people can keep in touch with friends and relatives no longer in the local area.

There is also a large kitchen on the ground floor near to these function rooms so refreshments could be provided for functions in these rooms.

There will be a fully equipped gym on the ground floor.

The first stage of the restoration would be to bring the ground floor gym and function rooms into use as soon as possible with the ballroom and restaurant opening later.

Any suggestions as to the use of the ballroom could be emailed to;

Instead of having a grand opening night we are going to have a week long celebration of the reopening of the Jarrow Civic Hall where we will be able to showcase all that the Civic has to offer.

We are hoping to have the Civic opened in late summer/early autumn.

Here are some photos of the The Jarrow Civic;
This is how the Civic originally looked. The building was then called the Jarrow Mechanics Institute.

On 22nd July 1863 Mrs Jane Palmer of the Palmer ship building family laid the foundation stone.
The building's famous clock was a gift from Lady Northbourne, who also gave Christ Church to the people of Jarrow.

The building was gifted to the town by famous shipbuilding magnate Sir Charles Mark Palmer in 1877.

The building once boasted an extensive library and reading rooms, again donated by Palmer. The Mechanics' Institute went on to become the town's most famous dance hall, throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s, when it was popularly known as 'The Max.'

The building later became known as The Jarrow Civic Hall

This is how the Civic looks today in October 2010.
The second picture shows the poor state of the flat roofs.

The area around the entrance door has been changed from
the original look by having rendering put around it which has
subsequently been hacked off for some reason. One proposal
for how we might improve the look of the front entrance is
shown in a picture at the bottom of this page. We are also
looking at other options. All of which will be subject to
planning permission.

These are pictures of the room we are calling the ballroom lounge.  This room
is situated behind the ballroom and has a kitchen along side it. As well as the
bar that would be included here we could also have catering facilities. The Hatch
you can see at the back of the room is a serving hatch from the kitchen.

These are pictures of the ballroom, one from the stage looking to the back of the room and
one from the back of the room towards the stage. As you can see the stage is a good size and
would accommodate many different events where a stage would be used. It is obvious that
much work is needed in renovating and decorating the ballroom. You can see from the photos
that a suspended ceiling was added at some time in the past rather than renovating the
original ceiling. We propose to remove the suspended ceiling and restore the ceiling to its
original condition. This will involve over boarding the ceiling and skimming and reinstating
the cornices that were damaged when the supports for the suspended ceiling were installed.
It will also be necessary to remake and install the gorbals that were removed when the suspended
ceiling was installed.

These are some pictures of the original ceiling taken above the suspended ceiling.
You can see some of the damage caused to the cornice caused when the gorbals
were removed from the bottom of the feature arches.

This is picture of the original corbel that would that would have been under
each of the feature arches under the original ceiling. Two of the corbels
which are situated in the stage area survived the 'modernisation' that
occurred some years ago. The corbels that were in the main dance-floor
area were removed to enable the suspended ceiling supports to be fixed.
Unfortunately when they were removed the cornice either side of each
corbel was serverely damaged.

The following pictures show the location of what would be an Italian restaurant
on the ground floor on the left side of the building. The first 2 pictures show
the views from either end of the main room. The 3rd picture shows the passage
way that leads from the front door of the building to the entrance to the
proposed restaurant. We are thinking of setting the passage out in the style
of an Italian street leading to the entrance.

Below is a drawing of the existing layout of the ground, mezzanine and first
floors. The picture below this is an idea of how the front might look. This is
just a proposal at the moment as we are still considering various options.
The final changes would of course be subject to planning permission.
